Jon Voight Rejects He’s Mocking Trump With Latest Movie
Oscar-winning actor Jon Voight recently disputed claims that he’s mocking former President Donald Trump with his newest movie.
On Tuesday, Voight, 85, sat down with Variety and spoke about a wide variety of topics, including a new movie in which he stars, Megalopolis, written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola.
“A conflict between Cesar, a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero, who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare,” a description of the movie reads on Rotten Tomatoes.
Variety reported that the film “has a definite anti-Trump vibe,” which includes riots similar to those seen at the U.S. Capitol on January 6. According to the outlet, some have thought that Voight’s character, Crassus, was supposed to be a mock aimed at the former president.
“I didn’t see that,” Voight said when asked about the claims. “If I had, I would have told Francis he was out of line.”
Voight, father of actor Angelina Jolie, has been a vocal supporter of Trump over the past several years, including the former president’s current run up to the 2024 race. President Joe Biden recently announced his exit from the reelection campaign and threw his support behind Vice President Kamala Harris.
In 2022, Voight shared a video on social media in which he predicted that Trump would return to the White House next election.
“We’re in danger of a third world war,” he warned. “Can you not see the lie? Wake up … It’s a dark web. A dark world. But not for long. A change is coming.”
“A new light will emerge. The one president who understood truths … Trump will return to the presidency. Allow Trump to rebuild our soil and our land so we can rise to our glory,” Voight added.
Voight also endorsed Trump in 2016 and 2020 and the actor shared a video on X, formerly Twitter, following the July 13 assassination attempt against the former president.
“They can’t take down the truth. President Trump won’t give up. He’ll keep rising and help us to rise with him,” Voight said in the video.
Voight—who won the 1978 Best Actor Academy Award for his work in Coming Home and was nominated for an Oscar three other times—has shared a number of other videos on X showing support of Trump, including one on May 31 in which he criticized Biden and said: “We must vote for truths, trust, honor, safety, love, respect and we must destroy these animals.”
“I witness these crimes on social media, the news, I’m here to testify for truths and for honor. The man who has this country’s best interest, Donald J. Trump, he’s the only one that can save our country from destruction,” he said.
